Few days ago I took my inflatable boat to go to Evoia where my favorite short distance fishing spots are located. I arrived at the slip of Varnavas around noon when the air temperature has climbed more than 40 degrees Centigrade as my prime intention was to avoid the mounting heat and spend the rest of the day in the water. From there I took the route to the adjacent coast in Evoia, Porto Buffalo.
Evoia’s fishing terrain is not at all promising. In fact it has been heavily overfished all these years and the fish population has declined significantly making hard to find or catch a big indigenous pray such as a grouper. My focus was on the passing fishes that travel distances and swim near the surface such as seabasses, amberjacks and alternatively white breams.
The most efficient techniques I use are mainly two. The first is the ambush where I hide at a selected spot on the bottom and remain virtually still until I attract the potential pray. The other technique which I occasionally employ in conjunction with the first is the crawling pattern (aguatto) where I allow myself to slowly move over and very close to the bottom making short pauses along so that I can locate or surprise a hidden pray.
The bottom composition is a combination of rocky piles and sandy areas while the visibility is not very clear since a lot of sediment comes up from the bottom when stirred. Most of the times I use a 90cm long arbalete speargun under the thought that it is the most handable one when you need to turn it.
This day I was able to assure a decent catch for a meal. On my way back I tried some jigging with no success though since practically the day had gone. When I was about to take the boat out from the water I discovered that a lunatic driver had parked his car on the slip. Unfortunately, it is a commonplace to find brain dead and asocial people in public beaches where they want to be seen, drink coffees and stuff themselves in the tavernas.
However, I didn’t bother!. I managed somehow to put the boat on the trailer and return home with only wonderful and pleasant feelings.
