e-ENPLO: The Brunswick Press Event at Porquerolles

Μεταξύ της 20ης και 23ης Μαΐου επισκέφτηκα το γραφικό και καταπράσινο νησί Porquerolles στην Γαλάζια Ακτή της Γαλλίας για να παρακολουθήσω το ετήσιο Συνέδριο Τύπου της Brunswick όπου τα τελευταία μοντέλα των γνωστών εταιρειών, Boston Whaler, Sea Ray και Bayliner επρόκειτο να αποκαλυφθούν μπροστά σ’ ένα επιλεγμένο κοινό δημοσιογράφων από όλη την Ευρώπη. Η ατμόσφαιρα της εκδήλωσης ήταν ευχάριστη και φιλική και η φιλοξενία βολική αλλά ο καιρός αποτέλεσε την μεγαλύτερη δυσχέρεια ως προς την φωτογράφηση και τις δοκιμές των σκαφών.

Between the 20th and 23th of May I visited the picturesque and verdant Porquerolles island in Cote d’ Azur France to attend the yearly Brunswick Press Event, where the newest models of its renown brands, Boston Whaler, Sea Ray and Bayliner were to be unveiled in front of a selected group of journalists. The atmosphere of the event was pleasant and friendly and the hospitality comfortable but the weather turned to be the greatest hurdle towards taking photos and testing the boats.

Μόλις λίγα λεπτά πριν το αεροπλάνο προσγειωθεί στο αεροδρόμιο της Νίκαιας μπορούσα να παρατηρήσω ξεκάθαρα την κατάσταση της θάλασσας από το παράθυρο της θέσης μου. Τα μεγάλα κύματα σπάγανε αφρισμένα σε πολλά σημεία καθώς αυτά κατευθύνονταν προς την ακτογραμμή για να σκάσουν εκεί με δύναμη σηκώνοντας πίδακες αφρών. Ο ουρανός ήταν γκρίζος, ο άνεμος πολύ ισχυρός και η βροχή ακατάπαυστη ενώ η μετεωρολογική πρόγνωση δεν προέβλεπε καμία αλλαγή για τις επόμενες δύο ημέρες και μόνο την τρίτη (την Τετάρτη)αναμένονταν βελτίωση. Δυστυχώς, οι προβλέψεις αυτές επαληθεύτηκαν.

Just few minutes before the plane landed at the Nice airport I was able to clearly observe the sea condition from my window seat. The big waves were breaking in many pieces of foam as they were rolling out to the shore to be forcefully splashed there. The sky was gray, the wind very strong and the rain intense while the forecast predicted no change for the coming two days and the only improvement was expected to come at the third day (Wednesday). Unfortunately, those predictions came true.

Κατά το αρχικό σχέδιο αναμένονταν να είναι εκεί ενιαία σκάφη, τρία από κάθε φίρμα αλλά τελικά τα σκάφη ήταν δώδεκα, τέσσερα από κάθε εταιρεία. Συγκεκριμένα, από την Boston Whaler τα μοντέλα που υπήρχαν ήταν το 285 Conquest, το 230 Dauntless, το 170 Dauntless και το 210 Montauk ενώ από την Sea Ray τα 355 Sundancer, 235 Weekender, 210 SLX και το 190 Sport. Τέλος, η Bayliner παρέταξε τα σκάφη διπλής κονσόλας (bowriders) 235,195 και 175 και ένα καμπινάτο μοντέλο το 702 Cuddy.

The initial plan was that there would be nine boats in total, three from each brand but eventually the boats were twelve, four from every company. Particularly, from Boston Whaler the models were the 285 Conquest, the 230 Dauntless, the 170 Dauntless and the 210 Montauk while from Sea Ray the boats deployed were the 355 Sundancer, the 235 Weekender, the 210 SLX and the 190 Sport. Finally, Bayliner presented its bowriders, 235,195 and 175 and a cabin model the 702 Cuddy.

Σχετικά με τις παραπάνω φίρμες η Brunswick έχει οργανώσει ένα διαφοροποιημένο πορτοφόλιο. Τα Boston Whaler στέκονται στην πιο υψηλή κλίμακα, τα Bayliner έχουν ένα καλό λόγο αξίας προς τιμή και τα Sea Ray αντικατοπτρίζουν μια επάξια πολυτέλεια και ποιότητα για την επιπρόσθετη τιμή τους. Μόνο για πληροφόρηση θα αναφέρω ότι ο όμιλος Brunswick (η αμερικανική εταιρεία που ξεκίνησε την δραστηριότητα της αρχικά με μπιλιάρδα) έχει κάτω από την ομπρέλα της 33 διαφορετικές μάρκες σκαφών καθώς και τους κινητήρες της Mercury και Mercruiser.

Regarding those brands Brunswick has organized a diversified portfolio. The Boston Whalers are high end products, the Bayliners are value for money and the Sea Rays represent deserved luxury and quality for the premium price paid. Just for the information I mentioned that the Brunswick group (the american company that started its operations initially with billiards) has under its umbrella 33 different boat brands plus the Mercury and Mercruiser engines.

Το πρωί της Δευτέρας (21/5) έλαβαν μέρος οι παρουσιάσεις στην αίθουσα συνεδριάσεων του ξενοδοχείου Les Medes(***), ο χώρος της φιλοξενίας μου, όπου τα χαρακτηριστικά των νέων μοντέλων και η φιλοσοφία και η πολιτική του marketing κάθε εταιρείας επεξηγήθηκαν από τους αντίστοιχους εισηγητές. Έτσι από την Boston Whaler υπεύθυνος ήταν ο αντιπρόεδρος της εταιρείας κ. Jeff Vaughn ενώ από την Bayliner και Sea Ray οι κ.κ. Matt Guilford και Glenn Zelen αντίστοιχα. Επίσης ο κ. John Lasschuit παρουσίασε τις νέες εξελίξεις στους κινητήρες της Mercury και Mercruiser.

In early Monday (21/5) the presentations took place at the conference room of Les Medes hotel (***), the hosting place, where the characteristics of the new models and each of the brands’ philosophy and marketing principles were explained by each of the corresponding presenters. So, for the Boston Whaler in charge was mr Jeff Vaughn while for the Bayliner and Sea Ray were mr Matt Guilford and mr Glenn Zelen respectively. Also mr John Lasschuit elaborated on the new developments of Mercury and Mercruiser engines.

Κάθε πρωί στην διάρκεια των τριών αυτών ημερών τα σκάφη εξορμούσαν από την μεγάλη και σύγχρονη μαρίνα του Porquerolles για την φωτογράφηση και τις δοκιμές. Εγώ έδωσα την προσοχή μου στα Boston Whalers εφόσον αυτά είναι από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου σκάφη συνώνυμα της ποιότητας και την αντοχής στις σκληρές και απαιτητικές συνθήκες της θάλασσας ενώ την ίδια στιγμή είναι προσαρμόσιμα για να εξυπηρετούν τις ανάγκες του ψαρέματος και να προσφέρουν ανέσεις στο κατάστρωμα τους. Προκειμένου να διευκολύνουν το έργο της φωτογράφησης οι οργανωτές είχαν στην διάθεση των φωτογράφων ένα μεγαλύτερο cruiser Princess με εξωτερική γέφυρα προσφέροντας ένα ιδανικό υπερυψωμένο σημείο πάνω από τα σκάφη που περνούσαν. Αυτό αποδείχθηκε πολύ σωτήριο την τελευταία μέρα όταν ο καιρός καλυτέρευσε και ο ήλιος βγήκε.

Every morning during these three days in the row the boats were rushing out from the big and modern Porquerolles marina for the photo shoots and the test driving. I jumped on the Boston Whalers since these are some of my very favorite boats synonym of quality and endurance in the hard and demanding sea conditions being at the same time versatile to address the fishing requirements and offer comfort on board. To facilitate the photo sessions the organizers had in the disposal of the photographers a larger Princess cruiser with flybridge to provide an ideal vantage point over the passing model boats. This worked really good during the last day when the weather cleared up the sun finally came up.

Στην διάρκεια της δεύτερης ημέρας (Τρίτη) όλα τα σκάφη κατευθύνθηκαν από το Porquerolles στο γειτονικό νησί Illes d’ Hyeres όπου βρίσκεται το εθνικό πάρκο Port Cros μαζί με ένα θαλάσσιο πάρκο καθιστώντας το μέρος ένα σταθερό πόλο έλξης για τους δύτες. Εκεί στο γραφικό λιμανάκι το οποίο βρίσκεται κάτω από την επίβλεψη του επιβλητικού κάστρου του Port Cros μας προσφέρθηκε το μεσημεριανό γεύμα σ’ ένα τοπικό εστιατόριο. Στην διάρκεια αυτής της ημέρας οδήγησα όλα τα Bayliners σε μια αρκετά δύσκολη θάλασσα.

During the second day (Tuesday) all boats directed from Porquerolles to the nearby island Illes d’ Hyeres where the national park of Port Cros is situated alongside a marine reserve making the place a constant attraction for divers. There in the picturesque harbor overlooked by the imposing castle of Port Cros we are offered our lunch at a local restaurant. During that day I drove the Bayliners at pretty rough sea conditions.

Γενικά, το Συνέδριο Τύπου της Brunswick ήταν καλά οργανωμένο, προσέφερε ευχάριστη φιλοξενία και έλαβε χώρα σε μια φιλική ατμόσφαιρα. Αυτό που θα μπορούσε να είναι ακόμα καλύτερο θα ήταν αν κάποιος ηγείτο στην θάλασσα ώστε να συντονίζει την όλη διαδικασία των δοκιμών, να επιβλέπει τις διαδικασίες ασφάλειας και να ενημερώνει πριν την έναρξη των δραστηριοτήτων. Επίσης, περίμενα ότι τα σκάφη θα ήταν εξοπλισμένα με ηλεκτρονικά όργανα (συσκευή πλοήγησης) τουλάχιστον τα μεγαλύτερα από αυτά όπως το Boston Whaler 285 και το Conquest Sea Rea 355 Sundancer. Σε τελική ανάλυση η όλη εμπειρία μου ήταν ευχάριστη αλλά πολύ... υγρή!

In general, the Brunswick Press Event was well organized, offered a pleasant hosting and took place in a friendly atmosphere. What could have been a bit better though would be if someone was in charge of the sea activities to coordinate the scheme of the test driving, to oversee the safety procedures and to brief. Also, I was expecting the boats to be equipped with electronic instrumentation (navigational device) at least the bigger ones such as the Boston Whaler 285 Conquest and the Sea Ray 355 Sundancer. In total my whole experience was enjoyable but very...wet!

Παρακάτω παραθέτω αναφορικά τα σκάφη που υπήρχαν στην εκδήλωση. Σύντομα θα κάνω αναλυτική παρουσίαση για τα περισσότερα από αυτά.

Below I mention by title each of the boats presented in this event. I will make an analytical presentation for almost each of those in my coming posts soon.

Boston Whaler:

Ο αβύθιστος θρύλος συνδυαζόμενος από ένα ισχυρό ψαρευτικό DNA. Κάθε Boston Whaler παραμένει αβύθιστο σε κάθε περίπτωση ακόμα κι αν πλημμυρίσει με νερό και δεχθεί υπερβάλλον φορτίο την ίδια στιγμή ή όταν κοπεί σε κομμάτια. Τα σκάφη πληρούνται με ειδικό αφρώδες υλικό με τεχνολογία Unibond και έτσι κάθε αποθηκευτικός χώρος μπορεί να χρησιμεύσει και ως ψυγείο πάγου καθότι είναι θερμομονωμένος. Σε κάθε σκάφος αντιστοιχεί αποκλειστικά ένα και μόνο ένα σχέδιο γάστρας.

The unsinkable legend combined with a very strong fishing DNA. Any Boston Whaler remains unsinkable in any condition even when the boat is overflowed with water and excessive weight is exercised on her at the same time, or when the boat is cut in to pieces. The boats are filled with special foam material with the Unibond construction technology and thus every storage space can serve as icebox since it is insulated. For every boat strictly corresponds one and only one hull design.
